Home Remedies for Kennel Cough
I took my golden retriever to the vet today and he has kennel cough. Are there any decent (safe) home remedies for kennel cough besides cough medicine for this? I feel weird about giving my dog human cough medicine.
Do Home Remedies for Kennel Cough Work?
Human cough medicine is OUT. Don’t ever give your dog ANY human meds unless specifically recommended by your vet.

Robitussun DM is the only OTC that is safe for your dog. Should have asked the vet while you were there. You can always pick up the phone and give them a call.
cough syrup but really it needs to go to the vet and get meds! just get the infant kind
There’s no magic to this:

Robitussin DM. Use just 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of dog.
My friend the vet highly recommends this and I’ve successfully treated 8 dogs (all vaccinated) who came down with a particularly nasty kennel cough (they sound awful, it’s normal) from the IX center shows in Cleveland. As long as they don’t have a green gunky nose and are not off their food, you can treat at home. In fact your vet will thank you for not bringing them in!
PS – to all you thinking antibiotics — this is about as effective as giving antibiotics for the human common cold! Antibiotics INEFFECTIVE against viruses. Improper and overuse of antibiotics is what causes antibiotic resistant bacteria to develop! In kennel cough, as in the human common cold, antibiotics are ONLY for the dog with a secondary bacterial infection — VERY rare, along the lines of a person with a common cold developing pneumonia. Only (ONLY) if your dog has a green gunky nose or won’t eat are antibiotic necessary!
the only over the counter remedy we suggest is Robitussin DM. Nothing else is safe or effective.
No. There are no home remedies. This is a SERIOUS condition, and it needs to be treated properly, swiftly, and by a vet.
is that what the vet gave you? He did not prescribe any antibiotics? The vet should have given your dog a pendex shot and doxycycline for kennel cough. You can give cough med Robitussin DM to help the cough but antibiotics will cure it in no time.
Home remedies is not going to cut it,please take the advise of your vet, pets take many human medications with no problems.I hope your dog got an antibiotic shot while at vet..
